FREE Magazines (and what to do with them!)

February 25th, 2010

Watching for free magazine deals is just another one of the ways I save money while still enjoying luxuries, like magazines! There are LOTS of free magazine subscriptions available and many more highly discounted subscriptions if you keep your eyes out. I almost never pay full price for a magazine subscription.

Recently saw a FREE one year subscription to the Weight Watchers magazine and was so excited to sign up for it because I had been thinking about actually paying for the subscription after checking out a copy at my weekly WW meeting. Signing up for the free subscription saved me $20 bucks!! Woohoo!

Want to know another little secret? While I love getting free magazines, I HATE excess clutter, so after I’m finished looking at the magazines, (and after I have of course scoured them for coupons!!) I get rid of them! Here are a few things I do:

  1. Cut out my name and address, and then take them to the library where there is a FREE box. They never last long, and other people get to enjoy the magazines as well. I’ve taken from this box quite a few times too!! Many of the places we’ve lived have these boxes at the library. I often find coupon inserts in there too!! If your local library doesn’t have a FREE box, maybe ask about starting one!
  2. Donate to a doctor/dentist’s office or hospital waiting room (with permission).
  3. Leave them at the laundromat for others to enjoy while their clothes wash/dry :) .
  4. Pass them on to friends who don’t get the subscription.
  5. Let my kids cut out pictures while I am clipping coupons. It keeps them busy, gives them practice using scissors, and helps them feel like they are participating in what I am doing.
  6. With the above pictures they cut (sometimes I help cut too), we make collages. My kids LOVE gluing.
  7. Cut out large letters from the article titles and ads, and then we build words, write collage-cut “letters” to grandmas, practice spelling words, etc. SOOO many fun ideas here.

Here are some FREE magazines I just signed up for:

FREE year’s subscription to Baby Talk

FREE subscription to Babytalk Magazine

FREE six month subscription to American Baby magazine

American Baby February 2010 cover

FREE 2 year subscription to Lego Club Magazine and Lego Club Magazine Jr.  (my son is THRILLED!) (Thanks, Freebies4moms!)

Shopping Trips: Week Four

February 25th, 2010

$22.08. Yep, not bad, right? Really all we needed was some milk and produce (which I usually get at Kroger), but I left the kids at home with my husband and decided to run over to Walmart and pick up some FREE and almost free items as well. And see the Pictureka game? Ha! Take that grumpy middle-aged lady! The register took my coupon without a problem and I brought the game home for $0.24. I only dared get one though, just in case. But I’ll be back!

Free (with coupons): Johnson’s Bath Buddies, DiGiorno 200 calorie pizza, Reach floss, Kotex liners, Pilsbury Grands biscuits, Kikkoman soy sauce

Sorry, I can’t find the receipt at the moment or I would break it down better. . . .

Today I went back for another produce/milk run and spent $24.19. Milk didn’t make it into the photo.

Not nearly as impressive, just some staples we needed. I’ve learned that the best time to go to Kroger is fairly early in the morning (if I can get all the kids ready and out the door by then!) because that’s when they do most of the Manager’s Special markdowns. The majority of my bill went to meat–I got three lean beef roasts marked down from $4.29 to $2.09 a pound. I’m not sure if that’s a “stockup price” but it’s about the best I’ve seen for lean beef. As soon as I got home I put the roasts in the crockpot and will shred the meat and freeze it for next month.

Oh, I also stopped off at Walmart again because I wanted to price some pantry shelving. While I was there I picked up a couple more card games–without a problem. Saving those for party favors for a game night we are hosting in a couple of weeks.

I wanted to also mention that we helped some friends move this past weekend, and as a bonus I brought home a couple of boxes of canned goods that our friends decided not to take on with them. I donated quite a bit of it to a food drive our church is hosting, but I shelved quite a bit in my pantry as well–mostly canned fruit, Campbells cream soups, dried beans, and spices.

February has been a good month. I feel like I have stocked up quite a bit, and have been able to stay within budget. It’s exciting to me to see how much we’ve been able to buy for so little because we’ve changed our shopping habits and are using coupons.

Eating Out…for less

February 19th, 2010

When Jared was working on his Master’s we lived in a small campus apartment with FREE cable! I know it sounds nerdy, but I loved watching the Food Network, and one of our favorite shows was Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Eating out has always been our favorite date, and even living on a budget we’ve been able to make the occassional eat-outs happen :) .

During Jared’s schooling we knew we would be in that college town for at least two years, so we came up with a silly, but fun idea. We decided to go through the phonebook, starting with “A” and try all the restaurants in the city, all the way to “Z”. It wasn’t a huge place with a zillion restaurants, so we thought it would be do-able–about 2 a month according to our estimations. Oh, and we skipped over the chains and well-known places. We wanted to try JUST the local diners, drive-ins, and dives.

It was super fun and we got to try all kinds of different foods. I have to be honest, we didn’t make it all the way through the alphabet by the time we moved though because we found a couple places that became our favorites and we decided to abandon the idea. We DID try a lot of them though.

One of the gems we found which allowed us to continue to eat out fairly regularly (once a week or less) and try so many local places while still living on a tight budget is Restaurant.com. Have you checked out this site? It’s seriously cool. Here’s a little info if you are new to Restaurant.com.

  • Restaurant.com partners with restaurants in your area that are looking for new customers. It’s a form of advertising for these restaurants. Enter your zipcode to find the participating restaurants in your area.
  • Restaurant.com offers YOU a giftcard at a REDUCED price which you purchase on their website, print off, and then take to the restaurant. For example, you can usually purchase a $10 giftcard for $4, or a $25 giftcard for for $10. BUT, to sweeten the deal, Restaurant.com often has coupon codes where you can get a FURTHER discount! Right now (until 2-21) you can use the coupon code: ENJOY to get 70% off your total!!! That means you can get a $10 giftcard for $1.20 or a $25 giftcard for $3!
  • The only “catch” if you want to call it that, is that most giftcards will have a “minimum” order amount (which they clearly tell you under the price). For example, when you purchase a $25 giftcard (for $3!!), your minimum restaurant purchase must be $35 plus tip. You pay $25 with your giftcard, and then the remaining balance, plus your tip.
  • The gift cards don’t expire for a year.
  • Oh! You can also buy Restaurant.com gift cards from Swagbucks!

It really is a good deal, especially if you want to try out local restaurants.  Jared and I had never tried Indian food, so we tried an Indian restaurant when we were working on our A-Z list. We were able to try several different dishes to get our minimum order total high enough, but we left the restaurant very full and knowing we loved naan, and that curry was very spicy! Usually when we go out we save money by drinking water and skipping appetizers and dessert. But with the Restaurant.com gift cards, we can splurge on the “extras” or take the whole family out, and only pay about $15 ($10 for the meal, plus tip. Although we usually tip more generously because I was a waitress in high school and believe in passing along the good deed.)

(Mom, don’t read this part ;) ) For Christmas this year we gave my inlaws a $25 gift card to Tony Romas, which we purchased from Restaurant.com at a further discount with a coupon code. Then I made a cute card and slipped the gift card plus a $10 bill into the envelope. I realize this kind of gift might not be appreciated by everyone, but in our situation everyone won because they got to go out for a nice meal for free, and we got to give a nice gift, while still keeping to our budget.

On Monday I’m giving away a $25 Restaurant.com giftcard here if you want to enter!

Dates on a Dime: Out for Ice Cream!

February 19th, 2010

It’s Friday and my husband and I try to make it our typical “date night”. Sometimes (ok, rarely) we hire a babysitter; sometimes we swap babysitting with our friends; sometimes we wait until after the kids go to bed then we play a game, make a fun dessert, watch a movie, etc.; and sometimes we include the kids (which means it’s more of a family activity than a date night…). Last week we included the kids and went out for ice cream, “dates on a dime” style!

We recently moved to a small town and are still trying to scope out fun things to do in our new hometown. Before we moved we had a favorite local ma-and-pa-type ice cream shop we visited a couple times a month. It was so cute to watch the kids stand on their tiptoes to see into the glass-topped freezer to choose their favorite flavor from tubs of homemade Rocky Road, Peanut Butter Fudge, Prailines and Cream, Rainbow Sherbet, Blue Bubblegum, and more.

A couple of weeks my son ago was remembering our favorite shop and said, “I wish we could go to an ice cream parlor here.” Since I’m always on the lookout for good deals, I was excited to find a flyer for a local ice cream shop among the junk mail which included some B1G1 FREE coupons! I knew a wish was about to come true!

So, last week we took the kids out for ice cream and we shared two HUGE sundaes with several different flavors of ice cream and toppings. And we used the B1G1 FREE coupon so the total was less than $5. We could have gotten smaller sundaes and paid less, but we were having a hard time deciding among the flavors! My favorite was a White Chocolate Brownie Chunk. YUM.

My point to this post is that even while living frugally you don’t have to give up going on dates or going out to eat. It’s the memories that mean the most.

Swagbucks Hunt is On!

February 18th, 2010

New to Swagbucks? Read more here.

There is a Swagbucks hunt going on right now where you can earn an extra point! More details on the Swagbucks blog (another hint: look for snake pants in a bigger size ;) ). Be sure not to link up or post the actual code anywhere, because Swagbucks will disqualify anyone who does.

$0.19 Cookie Mix!

February 18th, 2010

I made an emergency garbage bag run tonight, and picked up a few other goodies while I was there. My total was: $6.73.

I’m most excited about the six packages of cookie mix I picked up for $0.19 each! Since they are a seasonal flavor they were marked down, and then I had six $0.40/1 coupons (here and here) which were doubled. Yay me! The paper towels weren’t a great deal, but I’m out and they were cheaper with the coupon than the generic brand. I’m looking forward to making more Brown Rice Pancakes with the wheat germ! And the strawberries and whipping cream were just a splurge. See, I don’t buy EVERYTHING with coupons!

Groceries and Homemade Valentines

February 17th, 2010

Last week I did a few smaller shopping trips throughout the week.

Here is a quick summary:

Trip One (Kroger):$17.19 OOP (out of pocket), but got a $6 in catalinas for my next trip and submitted the $5 SC Johnson rebate for the Ziplocs.

Uck, sorry for the blurry photo…

  • Chocolate bars: Free
  • Salad Dressings: $0.94 each
  • Noodles: Free
  • Biscuits: would have been free but forgot my coupons, however with sale and $4 catalina promotion they were $0.22 a can. Still pretty good!
  • Ziploc bags: $0.26 each box (after rebate)
  • Hershey’s Hugs and Kisses: $2.18 each

We made these Valentines with the chocolate Hugs and Kisses and Ziploc bags:

Trip Two (Kroger): $11.30 OOP I was able to lower the total by buying this in two transactions. Used $6 in catalinas in first transaction, got another $4 catalina for the biscuits, and then paid for the rest of the groceries with that. Biscuits were free this time because I remembered my coupons (on sale for $0.99, used three $0.30/2 coupons–doubled, then got a $4 catalina when I bought six cans)! Pizza, soda, and ice cream for a family movie night.

Trip Three (Rite Aid):$51 (and some cents), but will be getting $21 back in SCRs (Single Check Rebates)

I was hoping to pull off a better deal here but wasn’t organized enough with my coupons and had all the kids with me. Rite Aid is harder for me to shop at with all of them because they have such small carts that my kids have to walk beside. And convincing a 2- and 4-year old to stay right by the cart is pretty tricky.

HOWEVER, $30 is still a good deal for: 4 packages of Pampers and Huggies diapers, Covergirl mascara and eyeshadow, 2 packages of Tide laundry detergent, 2 Old Spice deodorants, Secret Deodorant, 2 Gillette shaving creams, 2 bottles of Cascade dishwasher detergent, 5 cans of Pringles, Mr. Clean Magic Erasers and cleaner!  Before coupons the total was over $100.

Stay tuned for lots of biscuit recipe ideas!!

*HOT* FREE Fresco Taco at Taco Bell

February 16th, 2010

Go here to print a coupon for a FREE beef, chicken, or steak Fresco Taco at Taco Bell. We tried the chicken and steak (free with the coupon of course) a couple of months ago and thought they were pretty good! I was able to print again (one per computer), so it looks like it’s been reset. The coupon expires seven days after you print it, so plan to use it quickly if you are going to print. Maybe the kids and I will go out for lunch this week!
